Galepharm was founded in 1959 by a group of pharmacist friends as a non-profit making association.

At that time people felt that specialising in the manufacture of individual types of medicines (e.g. pills, suppositories, tablets etc) even in the pharmacy made sense. So the pharmacists linked to Galepharm assumed the manufacture of individual types of medicine in their own pharmacy. They were thus able to create high quality manufacturing equipment and profit from the specialist know-how of their colleagues, with whom the manufactured products were exchanged. They also engaged in joint purchasing of innovative instruments and apparatus, from which all pharmacies in Switzerland, and not least patients, were able to benefit.

Over the past 50 years the possibility of manufacturing in a pharmacy has been restricted by regulations. This is why it is no longer possible, without a Swissmedic licence, to supply other pharmacies with house specialities or even stock them in the pharmacy. The amount of effort required to obtain such a licence is great. All members of the Galepharm cooperative have therefore stopped manufacturing products – with the exception of Hermann Hotz, the former owner of the pharmacy in Küsnacht on the Lake of Zurich. Galepharm has been a stock corporation since the start of 2010.

Here in Küsnacht we have faced up to the requirements of present day pill production and equipped the production area with clean room technology. Like the large pharmaceutical companies we have GMP certification. We comply with national and international conditions and are audited at regular intervals by government inspectors. The effectiveness of our range of medicines has been proven in clinical studies.
